Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine last Wednesday, the entire world has been observing the situation in Ukraine. Many Ghanaians are concerned about the safety of their countrymen studying in Ukraine. There are nearly 1,000 students enrolled in the country, and there have been calls for an escape strategy for them.
Today, Friday, February 25, 2022, on Good Morning Ghana, Randy Abbey was joined on the show by Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, and Nana Akomea, Director at the STC. The issues they discussed centered on the Ukraine crisis. Okudzeto believes that the government's response to the invasion has been delayed, which has left many Ghanaians in Ukraine handicapped.
He pleaded for additional aid for Ghanaians, claiming that other nations, such as Nigeria and South Africa, have already made plans to evacuate their citizens from Ukraine. Randy Abbey, on the other hand, reminded Okudzeto that he bears equal responsibility. As previously reported, Okudzeto stated in an interview with Johnnie Hughes on the New Day show last week that the situation in Ukraine at the time did not merit an evacuation. Nana Akomea and Randy Abbey brought these comments to Hon. Ablakwa's attention and questioned why he was now blaming the government.
Okudzeto Ablakwa responded that he was informed by the Russian Ambassador in Ghana that Russia had no intention of invading Ukraine, and it was on the basis of this knowledge that he refused evacuation requests. At that point, Randy Abbey laughed and stated that Ablakwa should not have expected the Russian Ambassador to know anything because the Russian government had systematically disseminated false information about an invasion. Randy Abbey told Okudzeto not to blame the government for being duped by the Russian Ambassador in Ghana, but to admit that he was.
