Three members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAGsection )'s at the University of Education in Winneba have left the organization. Prof. Samuel Asiedu Addo, Dr. Samuel Ofori Bekoe, and Dr. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku are the individuals in question.
In a rejoinder, the group of three stated that their decision is the result of the UEW branch of UTAG voting to reject the NEC decision on the same day that the UTAG Committee (NEC) announced the suspension of the Association's industrial action that began at the start of the current academic year at a press conference.
"While we recognize the prerogative of members who voted to reject the NEC's decision, we are astonished by the rapidity with which it was made," they say.
"We are similarly astonished in the way in which the decision to reject the NEC's decision to halt the strike was announced," they said.
"This sent a defiant and disrespectful message to the UTAG NEC," they claimed.
"We recall the year 2017 when some elements in UEW UTAG (with their leaders currently occupying executive positions at the branch level of the association) openly and brazenly constituted themselves into "Concerned UTAG Members" to reject and go against a decision made by the NEC at the time," the group said.
"This makes us wonder if the hurry and manner in which the decision to reject NEC's instruction was made and announced had any ulterior motives." Especially when we have evidence that the NEC of UTAG has been officially asked by the government to meet with it in order to begin discussions, as we do.
"Show solidarity and respect for the NEC of UTAG, to maintain the association together at all times," the group encouraged its members.
"We must weigh the appeals of parents, kids, and other stakeholders while keeping steadfast in our demands for the restoration of our working conditions," the organization stated.
