Hansjorg Wyss, an 86-year-old Swiss billionaire, has disclosed that he has been asked to make a bid for Chelsea FC, with owner Roman Abramovich's stance on selling having evolved.
While it had previously been declared that Chelsea was not for sale, it was announced on Tuesday that Abramovich may now be willing to sell the club in light of the prospect of UK government penalties following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last week. The Russian-Israeli is said to have intimate links to Vladimir Putin and Moscow.
Abramovich had tried to separate himself from the football club by entrusting its management to a charitable foundation, but this is thought to have caught trustees off guard and caused several to reconsider their positions.
