Referees' decision-making is influenced by VAR. The on-field referee always makes the final decision. It has been recommended that technology be used to help sport officials make better decisions. Although the influence of the video Assistant Referee VAR in association football is unknown, it is an example of how technology can be utilized to aid decision-making.

Everton fell 1-0 to Manchester City last weekend, but the manner of the defeat was very contentious because the VAR department refused to award a penalty for handball against Manchester City's midfielder (Rodri).

After conferring with his video assistance, the referee called for offside, depriving Everton of a clear penalty. Everybody was upset, especially Everton's coach, who had been denied a point.

The PGMOL has apologized to Everton manager Frank Lampard for the VAR judgment that led to his team's loss to Manchester City on Saturday. Mike Riley, the general manager of PGMOL, called Bill Kenwright and Lampard to discuss the judgment, which they all agreed was incorrect.

Rodri certainly handled the ball inside the box late in the second half, denying Everton the chance to square the scores. After centre referee Paul Tierney missed the incident, VAR Chris Kavanagh determined there was insufficient evidence to demonstrate the ball had impacted the City player on the arm.

Everton were denied the opportunity to equalize from the spot and earn a crucial point in their fight against relegation. Lampard, who took over as Everton manager from Rafa Benitez in January, was enraged after the game, with his new club just one point above the relegation zone.
