MANCHESTER UNITED are yet to choose their new permanent manager.

According to former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, Manchester United have already "missed the boat" on their potential next manager option. Following the firing of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November, United are still looking for a permanent manager. Ralf Rangnick is now in control of the team as an interim manager, however he will leave at the end of the season to pursue a consulting position.

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are two of the frontrunners to succeed Jose Mourinho as United manager.

Carlo Ancelotti has also been mentioned as a possible short-term replacement for Jose Mourinho.

Richard Arnold, United's new CEO, is in responsibility of hiring a new full-time leader.

However, Murphy believes United have already passed up on the ideal candidate.

Antonio Conte, who was appointed Tottenham manager last November, according to the pundit, would have been the appropriate guy to turn things around at United.

"This is a [United] group that needs some guidance, coaching, stability, and tactical nous, and they are all over the place right now," Murphy remarked on talkSPORT.

"Antonio Conte has been a source of controversy at Tottenham for a variety of reasons, but he was the sort [United] required.

"That was the one; he was the one who missed the boat."

Conte's future at Spurs is uncertain, but his contract is slated to expire at the end of the current season.

Meanwhile, Murphy does not believe Ancelotti, a fellow Italian, is the ideal fit for United.

"I don't believe so," Murphy added.

"I have the biggest regard for him [Ancelotti], for the tasks he's done over the years, and for the fact that he's considered to be a great guy."

Man United's latest news: Before joining Spurs, Antonio Conte was connected with the United job (Image: GETTY)

"With the exception of AC Milan, the club he adored, where he spent eight seasons in all many years ago, he has never been in a job for more than two seasons."

"But he was at Chelsea for two seasons, PSG and Real Madrid for two seasons, Bayern Munich for a year, Everton for eight months, maybe less, and now he's back at Madrid."

"I believe United should consider something more secure and long-term." I get that this is the polar opposite of how Chelsea achieves success, but we're discussing Manchester United, which follows a different paradigm.

"I also believe Ancelotti's management style is one of going into numerous clubs who already have success, superstars, and players at the peak of their game, and just keeping it going — Everton was obviously different."
