President Akufo-Addo has stated that the phenomena of coups d'etats have hampered rather than advancing the cause of the African continent.
On Thursday, the President addressed a delegation of the newly-elected leadership of the Pan African Youth Union at Jubilee House, pushing comrade leaders to take bold actions to combat the Region's tendency of coups.
He went on to say that leaders must make an effort to insist on effective governance capable of promoting and safeguarding Africa's interests.
According to him, the best way to address the African continent's security challenges is to promote democratic responsibility.
"On our continent, we must insist on decent government and democratic responsibility." On our continent and in our different nations, we have witnessed coups and military incursions."
"They didn't bring us the development we should have had," he continued, "therefore [we] should promote the values of democratic involvement."
An increase in military takeovers
It should be remembered that Guinea had political upheaval in May 2021.
Prior to that, in August 2020, Mali suffered a coup. The commander of Mali's junta, Col Assimi Gota, was inaugurated as the country's temporary President and promised "credible, fair, and transparent elections."
Following these events, ECOWAS called a series of talks to reestablish political stability in the two countries.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has previously maintained the sanctions it had placed on Mali due to the transitional authorities' failure to supervise a peaceful democratic transition.
"Withdrawal of all ECOWAS Ambassadors in Mali; closure of land and air borders between ECOWAS countries and Mali; suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between the ECOWAS Member States and Mali, with the exception of the following products: essential consumer goods; pharmaceutical products; medical supplies and equipment, including materials for the control of COVID-19; petroleum products and electricity," according to the sanctions.
"There was also a freeze on assets of the Republic of Mali in ECOWAS Central Banks; a freeze on assets of the Malian State and State Enterprises and Parastatals in Commercial Banks; and a suspension of all financial support and transactions from all financial institutions for Mali."
