All and Sundry call her beautiful, that’s my Homeland Ghana. There’s a call on her to be great but how? She keeps morning a time immersed in possibilities. She carries with her the weight of what could have been. Isn’t it time she lived in the present? She’s looking around for what she has in abundance. Everyone but herself is to be blamed for her problems. She’s always harboured this mindset. Loyalty to political parties at the expense of the country’s best interest has become a part of her gene. She cries so loud in the streets for the things and situations that can be solved internally; that can be solved by her. She associates her failure with negligence and corruption. Are the leaders the only corporates? Are the citizens innocent? The questions about her are voluminous and for some strange reason, the solutions seem tiny. Everyone is better than her, at least, that’s how her citizens describe her situation. Brain drain is a wonderful word in the Social Studies book. Children learn about it and memorise it. They are encouraged to remain faithful to their mother Ghana. However, it so happens that the very thing they were advised against becomes the very thing they end up practising. A doctor would rather be a taxi driver abroad than practise the profession at home. Why? The answer lies in both the citizens and the leaders. Ghana, her name sounds melodious. Her anthem is to die for. But are her citizens moved by it? Mediocrity and fear keep the citizens stuck. There are a thousand and one reasons why they can’t be exceptional. These reasons are the effects of our lifestyle and attitudes. Our very Ghanaian attitudes of nonchalance, adamance and retrogression. Hypocrisy is a lifestyle and it’s not even wrong anymore. Who is telling the truth? Who is telling a lie? She’s still my home. The only place I have that is mine. What is my role in making it better? Am I willing to play my part? Are we willing to play our part? Happy 65, Ghana!
