Paul Scholes, a Manchester United legend, was not happy with the Red Devils' performance against Manchester City, and he slammed interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

After watching his former side serve up a disaster class against Manchester City on Sunday, Manchester United veteran Paul Scholes has criticised interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

United were defeated 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium, with goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Maharez sealing a comfortable victory for Ralf Rangnick's side.

Manchester United are now one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the hunt for the last Champions League position, with Mikel Arteta's team having three games in hand.

Rangnick faces an uphill battle if he wants United to compete in Europe's top club competition next season, and Scholes didn't think he was up to the challenge in the first place.

Ralf Rangnick's initial selection as Manchester United manager was questioned by Paul Scholes.

"So, what are our expectations? We've hired an interim coach who hasn't worked with a professional squad before "As he analyzed United's dreadful performance on Super Sport, Scholes stated.

"He hasn't coached a big squad, and he certainly hasn't coached at a big football club like Manchester United, where so much is expected of them. It doesn't matter who you're playing against.

Scholes was particularly harsh with the players, who were accused of not trying by fellow Manchester United icon Roy Keane on Sky Sports.

"On the football field, the players are lost," Scholes remarked. "I was astonished they played so well in the opening 20 minutes; they were at ease on the ball, and [Paul] Pogba up front looked fine."

"Don't get me wrong, his subs have done a great job over the last few weeks, but it was a deflated team."

Manchester United were beaten by their rivals.

"As much as you may slam United today, they're up against one of the best teams we've ever seen."

The former United player went on to say: "The players appeared to be lost in the second half. They appeared to be completely oblivious to what they were doing."

Scholes, who retired from football in 2014, said his former side was "fortunate" not to have conceded more goals against City, who ran wild at the Etihad.
