The second round of the Manchester derby, which is one of the most hotly contested and watched football matches in the world, took place at the Etihad stadium yesterday. However, it was a fairly one-sided match, with the citizens completely outplaying their city rivals Manchester United, winning 4-1.
Manchester City seized the lead in the fourth minute thanks to a close-range tap-in from captain Kevin de Bruyne, who has been in superb form this season as the club seeks to win the Premier League for the second consecutive season. Both Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan Bissaka's dreadful defending nullified Jason Sancho's equalizer, as the blue squad of Manchester took all three points with goals from Riyadh Marez as well.
Many Manchester United fans did not take the defeat in stride, since they had hoped for a tough match and for their players to give City a run for their money, but their hopes were nothing more than wishes.
Many of them resorted to social media to air their grievances and concerns, with the bulk of fans demanding that center back and skipper Harry Maguire be released because he has shown no signs of leadership.
A win for the Red Devils would have kept their top-four aspirations alive, with Arsenal, who are in fine form, taking advantage of their loss to earn a champions league spot with three games remaining. Since things stand, the Red Devils will need a miracle to qualify for the Champions League next season, as their only hope may be to win the trophy this season.
