Ghana's current economic catastrophe, according to the World Bank, is scarier than what the government is promoting.

According to Pierre Laporte, Country Director of the World Bank for Ghana, the government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must be cautious about the status of the economy.

He said the government has to let Ghanaians know the dire situation they’re in.

The World Bank Country Director, speaking during a public lecture organized by the OneGhana Movement on Monday March 7, 2022, described Ghana's economic position as "extremely serious."

"Is this a truly dire situation?" The data, after all, speak for themselves. The situation is critical. "When we've had meetings with government officials and even the head of state at the World Bank, we've not obscured the reality that Ghana faces a very difficult path ahead to restore macro sustainability," Pierre Laporte said.

"Yes, COVID-19 has been ineffective. However, even before COVID-19, there were signals that the situation was becoming more difficult. So, the most important thing is to be open with the public. Yes, the numbers speak for themselves, but not everyone has the same level of education as us."

"Because not everyone understands what the data represent, it's critical to discuss it in the way we are." "It's more crucial for us to figure out how to solve the situation," he continued.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently underscored the importance of shoring up Ghana’s fiscal space for development.

He claims that he cannot move the country ahead on his alone and so requires everyone's help to build a progressive and wealthy Ghana.

The government aspires to "turn Ghana into a world-class economic hub that benefits every Ghanaian," he said.

"I will not break my promise to assist in the development of a progressive and successful Ghana." But I won't be able to do it by myself. If we are to come back together and develop a Ghana that is not dependent on help, I need the support of each and every one of you," he said.
