After Robert Lewandowski failed to score in his last two Champions League games, it appeared that Sebastien Haller would have no competition for the Golden Boot this season.
So, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski scored three goals against Salzburg on Tuesday, overtaking the Ajax striker and extending his lead over Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, who scored nothing against Inter Milan on the same day. At right, Robert Lewandowski is shown.
Lewandowski scored a hat-trick in less than 24 minutes against Salzburg. It brought his goal tally in the Champions League this season to 12, making him the new leader of the competition's goalscorers chart, as Haller, who was in first place heading into the round of 16 second leg, now has 11 goals.
When Haller plays against Benfica in the second leg of their round of 16 encounter next week, he will have the chance to equal or surpass Lewandowski. As a result, when the Champions League quarter-finals roll around, the Polish striker may not be at the top of the goalscorers chart.
There is no way that Mohamed Salah will be third in the goal-scoring rankings, but if he comes in first or second, he will still be ahead of him. The Liverpool winger didn't score against Inter Milan, giving Robert Lewandowski a 4-goal lead.
Bayern Munich defeated Salzburg 7-1, while Inter Milan fell to Liverpool 1-0. Bayern Munich also scored four goals through Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sane. Lautaro Martinez scored the winning goal for Inter Milan.
The two clubs that qualified for the quarter-finals are Bayern Munich and Liverpool, with the former beating Salzburg 8-2 on aggregate and the latter beating Inter Milan 2-1 on aggregate.
