The Magpies were unable to sign the defender in January, and while they are rumored to be after him again this summer, the Spanish club is ready to make things difficult once more.

Sevilla has increased Diego Carlos' release clause to £67 million, which has thrown Newcastle United another setback in their pursuit of the player.

Several attempts to sign the defender by the Magpies in the January transfer window were turned down by the Spanish club.

Sevilla, who are chasing European glory and a La Liga title, have turned down all offers after weeks of negotiations failed to produce a deal for the 28-year-old, who was rumoured to be interested in a move to the Premier League team.

Sevilla rebuffed all attempts and were adamant about their assessment of the player, claiming that he would only leave if his release clause was met.

After failing to sign Carlos and Lille's Sven Botman in January, Eddie Howe signed Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion, but he hadn't given up hope of getting Carlos this summer.

However, Sevilla president Monchi has made it plain that the club would fight to keep Carlos for the next season, openly declaring that Carlos did actually sign a new contract last year.

Is Diego Carlos' £67 million price tag justified? Please share your thoughts in the comments box below.

Sevilla have lumped a hefty release clause on Newcastle target Diego Carlos

Diego Carlos, who has been linked with a move to Newcastle, has a large release clause in his contract with Sevilla.

"We renewed [the contracts of] Diego Carlos and [Lucas] Ocampos 14 months ago," he told Mucho Deporte. For strategic reasons, we didn't make it public."

It remains to be seen whether the Magpies are willing to pay the £67 million required to sign him in the summer; if they aren't, they can forget about completing any deal.

Following an eight-game unbeaten run that has propelled them to 14th place and seven points clear of the relegation zone, Toon chiefs are once again scouring Europe for players who can help them push for a top-eight finish next season.

Given the player's desire to play in the Premier League, the Magpies believed in January that Sevilla would be ready to let him move this summer for a more fair fee, maybe below his release clause.

Newcastle, on the other hand, may now be in line for a rematch with the Spanish team.Given the player's desire to play in the Premier League, the Magpies believed in January that Sevilla would be ready to let him move this summer for a more fair fee, maybe below his release clause.
