The National Sports Authority (NSA), which is in charge of managing and maintaining sports facilities across the country, is working against the clock to have the pitch at Cape Coast Stadium in tip-top shape for the vital 2022 World Cup playoff between Ghana and Nigeria.
The surface would need a lot of maintenance after Ghana's 65th Independence Day celebrations on Sunday if it is to be ready for the first leg match, which is 16 days away.
The National Soccer Association (NSA) published photos of ongoing construction on the pitch on Wednesday, assuring fans that it would be ready for the game on March 25, 2022.
"Immediately following the 6th March Independence anniversary last Sunday, work has commenced in earnest to rehabilitate the Cape Coast Stadium surface in preparation to host the Ghana vs Nigeria World Cup qualifying match on March 25, 2022," the NSA tweeted.
"The National Sports Authority (NSA) is working closely with its consultant, Mr Frank Boahen of Green Grass Technology Ltd. Currently, a variety of interventional operations like as fertilizer administration, intense watering regimens, and aeration by spiking are being carried out."
Given the short time span, however, there are concerns that the pitch will be perfect.
The Black Stars require a strong performance in Cape Coast to have a good chance of winning the tie and qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar.
The second leg will take place on March 29 at Abuja's Moshood Abiola National Stadium. Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man and a billionaire businessman, toured the facility last week after sponsoring the pitch's repair.
