CHECK OUT THE TWO POSSIBLE FACTORS DRIVING MOST TEACHERS FROM BASIC SCHOOLS TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS.

Teachers are leaving our public basic schools in droves to teach in Senior High Schools. Teachers in our basic schools who have the opportunity to advance do not return to the Primary and Junior high schools. These teachers leave for Senior high schools, which they believe are less draconian and burdensome than basic schools. Aside from the reasons stated above, the majority of these migrant teachers are interested in other economic reasons.

Responsibility allowance

There are opportunities for these teachers to earn extra allowances in Senior high schools that do not exist in Primary and Junior high schools. Form masters, head of departments, and house masters, among others, receive monthly responsibility allowances. Though it isn't much, any increase in a worker's salary, no matter how small, is always gratefully accepted.

Because of the large number of students in senior high schools, as well as the variety of courses available, most teachers will be appointed as form masters or house masters. Because of this one-of-a-kind opportunity, the majority of teachers have shifted from basic to secondary schools.

Incentive for SHS teachers

To bring parity to all schools, the Ghana Education Services abolished all extra classes across the various schools and appear to motivate them with an incentive to give extra time to the children. Schools are now required to add time to their normal closing time and are compensated on a yearly basis.

The money is distributed once a year and is based on the number of students enrolled in the school. The amount involved isn't enough of an incentive, but it's better than nothing. This has always made Primary and Junior high school teachers salivate. The few who are given the opportunity jump into the frame to share in the bounty.

Our teachers in the Primary and Junior high schools also need motivation

Teachers in primary and Junior high schools are pleading with the government to create incentives at that level as well in order to attract high-quality teachers.

The form master approach can also be used in Junior high schools across the country.

This will also aid in the improvement of supervision and, eventually, performance.
