In Ghana, there is a major irony in our educational system, particularly at the Primary and Junior high school levels. Why do our public-school teachers send their children to private schools, where they are mostly taught by untrained teachers?
Most middle-class parents prefer to send their children to private schools. There are hundreds of them, with prices varying according to one's financial situation.
From the most affluent in the major cities to the help-me-out ones in the villages and hinterlands. The teachers in the government-run primary and junior high schools are the most surprising.
Their children are also educated in private schools. Even teachers whose children are in the same grade(class) as those they teach in these public schools will prefer to send their children to private schools. Why? Don't they believe in what they teach? Do they have faith in the teachers in these private schools, most of whom are less educated than they are?
Factors to consider
The majority of teachers in government-run primary and junior high schools complained about the government's lack of attention to these schools. The majority of the work done there appears to be in disarray. There are no text books, and even if there were, there aren't enough for each of them, as there should have been. Except for the chalk, which is sometimes absent, there are almost no teaching and learning materials. Maps, globes, interactive visuals throughout the classroom, and, most importantly, computers are non-existent.
They claim that if these teaching and learning materials are made available in schools, they will be able to turn around the fortunes of public schools across the country in two years. They say they will continue to send their children to private schools until these resources are provided.
We are also using this medium to urge the government (not just this one) to provide the necessary materials to the various schools in order for them to provide the proper education. We make an impassioned plea to all who can help to support, because the children in these schools deserve better as well.
