Under the free SHS policy, the Ghana Education Service has directed Senior High School heads to demote students for poor performance and absenteeism. They believe that by doing so, the students will sit up and improve their performance.

The Free SHS policy has resulted in an increase in enrollment across all schools. The increase in numbers is accompanied by other teething issues. This was not possible in the early stages of the policy because students were promoted on a mass scale. The implementation of the demotion will force students to work hard in order to improve their performance.

Performance Issues

Poor academic performance is common in any educational system, including free SHS. Most students have consistently performed below average over the years.

The policy's robustness allows teachers to enter student grades through a portal to which the secretariat has access.

It is their monitoring of students' results over the years that has prompted this latest directive to demote students with poor academic records. Other remedial systems were included in the policy to serve these types of students.

Teachers were expected to identify students with learning difficulties and help them.

Absenteeism

Absenteeism is a canker that the Ghana education service has been fighting, especially on the teachers' front.

The issue of student absenteeism is rarely mentioned. This latest directive will lead to improved attendance. Students who rarely come to school end up with bad grades. This, they believe, will nib it in the bud.
