Whether you like him or not, he is the toast of many and a household name across the country. He's even been christened as "the man for all seasons." In politics, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a towering figure. August 14, 2008, marked his tenth anniversary in Ghanaian politics.
Many people are still puzzled as to how Bawumia, an economist with no political experience, came to know the game better than those who started it. According to Ghanaweb, an NPP insider said, Bawumia was not a card-bearing member of the party when he was first nominated in 2008. Many political pundits at the time described Nana Addo's choice as a shock, questioning how Nana Addo could win the presidency with a political novice.
He did not come to politics with any grassroots experience. He entered politics with an intellectual bent, and he has not disappointed. His charisma and eloquence were also valuable assets. Bawumia rose from being a novice in 2008 to becoming a rock and is still pushing. His solid economic and financial foundation made him a thorn in the flesh of the National Democratic Congress(NDC).
None could match him, forcing the NDC to appoint the late Vice President, Mr. Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, to keep him in check in 2012. However, personality clashes and Bawumia's charisma suffocated the late banker. To this day, 170 questions posed to the late Vice President remain unanswered.
The northern sector was once the exclusive domain of the NDC.
The Rawlings factor was a major reason for their unwavering loyalty to the NDC during the Fourth Republic.
The area had always been a tough nut to crack for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and many predicted that they would need something special to tip the heavily tipped scale in their favor. That something special was the man, Bawumia.
During the 2016 elections, he was the elephant family's front man and axe man, and he led so well.
At a time when his party was in power and the spotlight was dimming due to the economic downturn, the astute politician turned the spotlight back on himself, but on a different terrain. He claims that it is not a complete break because the two go hand in hand. If you can renew your health insurance from the comfort of your own home and use your Ghana card to easily complete a variety of transactions, you should be grateful to Dr. Bawumia. It's also his handy work.
