The Gunners spent heavily last summer, but with no new arrivals in January, there should be plenty of cash to go around later this year, and one former Arsenal player knows where they should spend it.

Arsenal have been urged to sign Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, who has been suggested as the ideal partner for Thomas Partey.

Arsenal currently sits in the Premier League's much-coveted fourth spot, one point ahead of nearest rivals Manchester United, who have played three games more.

Mikel Arteta knows as well as anyone that if Arsenal can hold their nerve and qualify for the Champions League, they will be able to attract a higher calibre of player in the summer.

Given the recent exit of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a new striker is likely to be the most pressing position to address, as current strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both out of contract at the end of the season.

However, former Arsenal striker Jérémie Aliadière believes Mikel Arteta should look to replace Granit Xhaka with the Wolves star ahead of next season.

Ruben Neves of Wolves has previously been linked with a big-money move to Arsenal.

Aliadière has insisted that the Spaniard look no further than the Molineux for inspiration.

The Frenchman explained to BonusCodeBets: "I believe (Ruben) Neves would be an excellent addition. I believe he is a top player." You need someone who will receive the ball, bring it forward, and become more involved in team play in the final third. That is why I believe Ruben Neves would be fantastic." Obviously, he has that shot from outside the box as well, which I believe Arsenal lacks."

Wolves' high asking price could be a stumbling block for Arsenal if they pursue Neves.

Despite Wanderers offering him around last summer after a difficult 2020-21 season – in fact, agents on Wolves' behalf contacted Arsenal about a potential transfer – the Portugal international has shone for Bruno Lage's side this season  and would most likely cost more than £45 million.

Aliadière believes the 24-year-old is well worth the money.

"I know he might cost a little more because he plays in the Premier League, but I just think Neves would be great." "Arsenal already has Partey in there, and getting a player with a similar play style, I don't think we need that." Neves, I believe, brings something new to the table."

A move to the Emirates, however, may be met with a cold reception, as his recent comments on Arsenal's celebrations following the Gunners' 1-0 win at Molineux have made him Public Enemy No. 1 with Arsenal supporters on social media.

After the game, Neves stated: "We saw how they celebrated their victory, and it demonstrates the level we are at.

"I didn't see Arsenal celebrating like this in the past 10 years - it was like they won the league."
