Following the sanctions imposed on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, Jurgen Klopp feels sport as a whole should "think more about where the money comes from."

The government issued a slew of broad measures against the London club's owner on Thursday, citing his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is now waging a war in neighboring Ukraine.

The measures include prohibiting the sale of tickets to both home and away supporters, as well as the purchase of official merchandise and the club's ability to negotiate contracts or recruit new players.

Chelsea's capacity to make a profit has been effectively frozen by the government, with the Prime Minister's spokesperson claiming on The "actions are certainly aimed to penalize Putin and ensure that any income earned does not make its way through to the Russian war machine," according to a statement released on Thursday.

Klopp said that the punishment was not due to Chelsea's wrongdoing, but confessed that he hoped it would raise more serious concerns about the billions of pounds spent in English football.

And Klopp stated he is pleased with the way the Reds' owners, Fenway Sports Group, run the club at Anfield.

Klopp responded, "I don't think it's really fair to ask me." "You've been in this country for a long time. Did it truly matter to you?

"When Roman Abramovich arrived at Chelsea, did anyone notice?

"Was it really that big of a deal when Newcastle was taken over? Do supporters actually give a damn?

"It's a rhetorical question. It's quite clear where the funds are coming from. We were all aware of it, yet we accepted it.

"It's entirely our fault. We accepted it since it was society's fault. We can no longer take it, therefore we punish them; it is not Chelsea's fault. Not in the least.

"I have no idea what background checks [for new owners] would look like," Klopp concluded.
