IS UCC SANDWICH AND DISTANCE EDUCATION IN CHAOS?

So many years ago, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) introduced the public to outreach programs such as Distance and Sandwich, especially those who desired to become professional teachers in the Ghana Education Service. Students enrolled in the sandwich and distant programmes can choose from a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

I shall simply base my case on the university's undergraduate programmes for training potential Ghanaian teachers. The institution has a long list of accomplishments, including tens of thousands of graduates who are currently employed by the Ghana Education Service and countless others who have been promoted to higher positions in the service after completing post-diploma undergraduate sandwich and distance programs.

Despite their gains, however, instructors who wish to utilize their outreach programs are losing interest in the previously vibrant and enticing sandwich and distance programs.

Sadly, students enrolled in the 4/5 sandwich programmes are frustrated and do not even know when next to report to their centres for beginning a new semester or when to finish the programme which.

Again, there is lack of transparency in the programme when it comes to students paying for tuition and utilities. Students are billed at the beginning of a new semester, yet they are not given the details of how much they are paying for the facilities, water, electricity, tuition, feeding, and accommodation. Thus, students have complained that the semester fees for sandwich programme is too high.

The lack of study centers for education, along with an unpredictable schedule of activities, is one of the most significant obstacles. Unlike the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), which has permanent study centres, UCC does not possess study centres and relies entirely on facilities in colleges of education (CoE) and senior high schools (Distance) to carry out its academic cycle.

This has mostly impacted students as a result of changes in the CoE academic calendar, which has impacted the timing of completion. When the calendar of the CoEs changes, the timetable of activities for the program is also altered.
