Cristiano Ronaldo will decide whether or not to stay at Manchester United for another season, according to Gary Neville. Ronaldo scored a hat-trick to lead Manchester United to a crucial 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday. It was his 59th hat-trick overall, but only his second in a Red Devils uniform.
Ronaldo returned to United from Juventus last summer.
He signed a two-year contract, but after just one season, he has been linked with a move away from the club.
Despite the fact that Ronaldo is United's all-time leading goalscorer with 18 goals, others argue that his presence has hampered the team's advancement.
All three managers under whom he has played this season have left him out of starting XIs on separate occasions.
With a year left on his contract, though, Neville claims the club will have no say in whether he stays or not.
On Sky Sports, Neville said: "Is Cristiano Ronaldo going to remain at Manchester United next season? There's this impending decision at the end of the season that everyone, I believe, knows is coming.
"People are wondering if Manchester United will keep him. - It's not a gift from them. That decision will be made by Cristiano Ronaldo.
"He has another year left on his contract; the question is whether he wants to stay. Whether this is the type of enterprise that he believes in and enjoys, as some players like to say."
When asked why Ronaldo has so much control over his fate, Neville responded: "I just believe in his talent, and he wants his career to be joyful at the end of the day; he's demanding.
"He's a hard worker who expects to win every game. There's this element of what he can't do, and we've contributed to it in this studio, and I've contributed to it.
"He's probably not the man for Manchester United if they want to be a high-pressing team with a lot of energy up front.
"However, he, not the other way around, will decide whether he continues at Manchester United next season."
