The Premier League board has barred Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich from serving as a director of the team.
It comes after the UK government placed sanctions on Abramovich in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including the freezing of the Russian oligarch's assets, which include property and Chelsea FC.
Chelsea's capacity to operate normally has been hampered as a result of the subsequent limitations, with the club granted a special license to continue playing football matches and paying employees.
However, it is unable to generate commercial revenue or participate in the transfer market, and it is possible that the club may be liquidated unless it is sold before the end of the season.According to the sanctions imposed on Abramovich, the government is expected to intervene by granting Chelsea a new license to allow them to be sold. As a result, Abramovich will not receive any of the proceeds of the sale.
Despite the disqualification, the Premier League board claimed in a statement that "the Board's decision has no effect on the club's ability to practice and play its fixtures, as set out under the conditions of a licence provided by the Government that expires on 31 May 2022."Chelsea's sponsorship with Three has been temporarily revoked, and their account with Barclays bank has been temporarily stopped, in addition to the punishments levied on them on Thursday.
Chelsea's next match will be in front of their home fans when they face Newcastle United, who are on a roll.
