According to DAILY POST, some suspected armed men opened fire on a burial ritual in Ndingbu village, Nnewi South Local Government Area LGA, on Friday 11th March, 2022.
However, it was unclear who was being buried at the funeral, but as stated by some newsmen, the shooters aimed for vigilante operators who were present to offer security to everyone present at the gathering.
According to sources, the thugs also went to the Utuh hamlet in the same Local Government Area LGA, where they set fire to a vigilante operative office and kidnapped one individual.
Although specifics of the attacks are still hazy, the Deputy Superintendent of Police DSP Toochukwu Ikenga of the State Police Command verified the event.
On the other hand, the Commissioner of Police CP Echeng Echeng, has launched a tracking operation for the armed individuals, according to Ikenga.
He stated the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorist Unit, Special Forces, and others who had been asked to deploy against the gunmen were already present in the area, and that normalcy had been restored while the operation was still underway.
" As a matter of fact, no alert of the planned burial was given to the Police, intelligence suggests that the Vigilante groups were invited, " he stated.
" Following the additional information gathered, the culprits arrived at the event and began firing randomly in an attempt to neutralize the vigilante operations.
In the meantime, " in a separate incident, hooligans stormed the Utuh Viligante office, kidnapped one of the staff members, and set fire to the Viligante Operation van. "
The Command, on the other hand, reminded inhabitants of the area that the police and other security agents will continue to provide security services in the state, while also urged citizens to assist the police with credible and reliable information that will aid the continuing operation.
