In his team talk before Manchester United's 3-2 triumph over Tottenham on Saturday night, Ralf Rangnick said that he reminded his Manchester United teammates of how horrible they felt after their defeat to Manchester City.

Ralf Rangnick reveals how he fired Man Utd squad up before Tottenham victory

United were thoroughly outplayed by City last week, especially in the second half, and their season appeared to be on the line ahead of Spurs' visit to Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in a furious game to lift Manchester United back into fourth place, two points ahead of Arsenal (who have four games in hand) and five ahead of both West Ham and Tottenham.

Rangnick claimed that, with United's failure at City dominating the build-up to the match, he reminded his team of the feelings they had after that humiliating defeat.

He stated, " "Before we left the locker room, before kick-off, I told the team that after the derby at the Etihad, everyone was heartbroken, frustrated, and unhappy in the locker room.

"Today [Saturday] was the perfect day, the best stadium, and the best opponent to exhibit the reaction we needed to express in front of 75,000 people.

"That was the only response we had after the game. You may lose to Manchester City when other teams lose there, no doubt, but the way we played in the second half was not Manchester United-like, and that was the kind of reaction we wanted to display."

The number of games that some clubs have left in hand skews the top four race. Arsenal are in first place, despite the fact that they still have games against Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool that were previously postponed.

United still have games against Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea to play, but their immediate focus will be on the second leg of their Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid in order to qualify for the quarter-finals.
