To tighten their grip on third place, they used chaos, but forward avoided a red card for an elbow on Dan Burn.

Kai Havertz pounced on Jorginho's superb long ball before poking home the winner a minute before time expired.

Chelsea, on the other hand, had been largely frustrated by Newcastle, having gone 75 minutes without a shot on target. Havertz, on the other hand, could have been sent off in the first half after a dangerous elbow into the face of Dan Burn.

Despite the fact that there is a crisis off the field,

Thomas Tuchel's team has now won five straight Premier League games.

It was a day when uncomfortable truths descended on Stamford Bridge, and it was perhaps fitting that the contest was decided by a goal from a player who really should have been sent off.

In the final seconds, Kai Havertz won the game by pulling a long pass out of the air with exquisite touch, adjusting his balance as he held off Dan Burn's challenge, and flicking the ball past goalkeeper Martin Dubravka with the outside of his left foot.

You couldn't help but admire the young German's brilliance as he scored his 13th goal of the season.

He is thriving in his second season in English football, but as Newcastle recovered the ball from their net, thoughts returned to an incident in the first half when Havertz flattened Burn with the force of an elbow in the face.

Havertz ran across the field to challenge Burn, who was jumping straight up to head a high ball. He took the lead with his arm, flexed it in mid-flight, and landed a blow just above Burn's right eye.

At first glance, it appeared reckless, even dangerous, and the replays looked even worse, as they usually do.

Nonetheless, David Coote drew a yellow card rather than a red one, and his VAR, John Brooks, agreed with the decision. Burn was enraged, continuing to play with a deep red bruise forming near his temple.

The agony would have been greatest in the 89th minute, when he was close to Havertz but powerless to prevent him from clinching three more points for Chelsea and cementing their place in the top four.

Newcastle's unbeaten streak had come to an end after nine Premier League games, and their traveling fans tried to cheer them up with another chorus of their favorite song of the day.
