Sylvester Matthew Tetteh, Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro Constituency, has stated that the contentious Electronic Transaction Levy, also known as e-levy, will not be necessary after all.
He agrees that there would be a drop in electronic transaction users in the early stages of implementation if it is approved, but that the situation will normalize.
On Monday, March 14, he said on TV3's New Day with Johnnie Hughes, "The e-levy is not an obligatory tax."
"That is why I believe that even government projections could be lower."
The bill requesting permission for the fee has been put on hold because Finance Minister Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, who first announced it on November 17, 2021, is on a regional tour to engage the public before returning to Parliament for further considerations.
The Bill has sparked so much debate that members of the two caucuses in Parliament have gotten into a brawl.
It is unclear when the Bill will be considered again, as it has been missing from the Business Committee's agenda week after week.
The Minority has stated unequivocally that it will fight the Bill to the finish.
On the same program, Adaklu MP Governs Kwame Agbodza stated that in the rare event that the e-levy is approved, he intends to cancel his Mobile Money account.
"Mr Hughes, the day the e-levy comes in, I will cancel my MoMo account," he promised, "because it just appears to me that the government sees me as a cash cow and after taking all of my taxes and the way I spend my money, they want to take even more."
