Here is a little history about Russia and Ukraine.
Russia and Ukraine trace their root to a Slavic state called Kievan Rus. Its Capital was Kiev, the Present capital of Ukraine. Kievan Rus was ruled by Grand Prince Volodimer. The name Volodimer is Ukrainian and in Russia its Vladimir. Coincidentally these are the names of the present presidents of Russia and Ukraine. But Putin is not invading Ukraine just because they have a shared origin or because he has the same name as their President. So why is Putin invading Ukraine and what does he want?
Simple, Ukraine was once under Russian Rule and also a part of the Soviet Union and therefore cannot join NATO. NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It is a military organization made up of United States, Belgium, Canada, Italy, France etc. Ukraine wants to join NATO and for Putin, NATO expanding to the east to reach Ukraine, a former member of the soviet union and former baby country of Russia is an act of war by the west and NATO and that cannot happen!!!
