The Cote d'Ivoire international had a frustrating night as his Dutch team was defeated by Nelson Verissimo's Eagles.

Sebastien Haller has made history by being the only player to score 11 or more goals in a Champions League season while not appearing in the quarter-finals.

The Cote d'Ivoire international was on the pitch from start to finish, but he couldn't prevent Ajax from losing 1-0 at home to Benfica in the competition's last 16 second leg on Tuesday.

Erik ten Hag's side lost 3-2 on aggregate, putting an end to Haller's outstanding debut season.

Haller's four goals in Ajax's 5-1 thrashing of Sporting Lisbon equaled Marco van Basten's 29-year-old Champions League record as the second player in the tournament's history to score four goals on his first appearance.

With his goal in the 2-0 win over Besiktas, the 27-year-old became the first player in Champions League history to score five goals in his first two games.

Prior to his record performance against the Turkish Super Lig team, the Ivorian had become only the second player in tournament history, after Netherlands great Marco Van Basten, to score four goals in his first game, a 5-1 thrashing of Sporting CP.

Furthermore, the former Eintracht Frankfurt and West Ham United midfielder is the fifth player in Ajax history to score in his first two Champions League games, joining Jari Litmanen (1994), Rafael van der Vaart (2002), Quincy Promes (2019), and Berghuis (2021).

Haller did not stop there, becoming the first player in Champions League history to score nine goals in five games.

Manager Ten Hag criticized bad luck for his team's elimination following the match against the Portuguese team.

"We've learned from our errors in Lisbon." And against this team, that's difficult," he told the press.

"Today, we didn't allow a counter." The organisation was good. They didn't have a chance to escape.

"The element of luck also plays a part. Finally, you realize that not much will be created. This is where everything has to be. That wasn't the case."

Ajax's attention will now turn to their Eredivisie match against Feyenoord on Sunday.
