United's dreams of ending their long wait for a trophy this season were dashed by the defeat. All attention now shifts to attempting to qualify for the Champions League next season, with their hopes of placing fourth in the Premier League hanging in the balance.
It also means that Ralf Rangnick's interim managership is coming to an end, with only nine games left on his contract. At the end of the season, the former RB Leipzig manager will become a consultant.
Former United player Hargreaves, on the other hand, has put a few additional names into the mix as prospective Rangnick assistants. When he was appointed temporary manager in December, the German agreed to a two-year contract.
