Lionel Andres Messi, better known as Leo Messi, is an Argentine professional footballer who captains the Argentina national team and plays as a forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain.

Cristiano Ronaldo, on the other hand, is a Portuguese professional footballer who heads the Portugal national team and plays as a forward for Premier League side Manchester United.

Messi and Ronaldo have both been at the pinnacle of their careers for nearly a decade, and they have had the longest and healthiest rivalry ever seen in the modern game of football, with it being impossible to discuss one without the other.Despite the fact that they are becoming older, the duo is still very much relevant in the game, even though their service delivery may not be as good as it was in earlier campaigns.

In less than a week, the couple appears to have been eliminated from the tournament at the round of 16. Despite having a two-goal lead at halftime against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu last week, Messi and his Paris Saint-Germain squad were unable to progress in their round of 16 clash.

A similar situation occurred yesterday, when Ronaldo's club (Manchester United) played Diego Simeone's side (Atletico Madrid) at Old Trafford in the second leg of their round of 16 contest, which concluded 2:1 on aggregate.

The two football legends are now out of the competition, and will thus miss the UCL quarterfinals for the second season in a row, according to the round of 16 tie results. As a result, the European Football Governing Body (UEFA) responded with a tweet from its verified Twitter account, captioned: "The quarter-final draw on Friday did not include Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. For the second year in a row, the duet fails to make the last eight.

"Finally, this is progressively signaling the end of an era, as the duo has just a few years left to deliver at their prime and is handing over the baton to those who will succeed them.

Meanwhile, the two leading scorers will be hoping to return to their respective clubs better and stronger in the coming season.
