Tension is increasing in the English Premier League table, particularly among the top four teams, as evidenced by Liverpool's 2-0 victory against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night, moving them closer to the league title.
Tottenham also won 2-0 against Brighton at the American Express Community Stadium on Wednesday, putting them in contention for a major tournament next season. They are currently in eighth place, two points behind Manchester United in fifth place.
Things were a little tough for Everton when they welcomed Newcastle United to Goodison Park on Thursday, but Frank Lampard's side ended their losing streak with a win in stoppage time.
And, in the spirit of player accomplishments, I offer to you the team of the week.
Goalkeeper
Asmir Begovic, who had been on a losing streak, couldn't contain himself any longer as he kept Newcastle United to a narrow victory with six saves, four of which were clever saves, and a clean sheet as Everton keeps their relegation chances alive.
Center-back
Virgil van Dijk and Cristian Romero
This week, Atalanta loanee (Romero) put up an outstanding performance against Brighton, as they won 2-0 on the road. With some clearances, tackles, shots on goal, and a clean sheet, he handed Spurs the lead and rumbled up the defense force. Van Dijk, the Dutch captain, had a fantastic game as well, making the duo ideal for this position.
Full-backs
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson
Andrew Robertson and Alexander-Arnold were clearly one of the greatest fullbacks in the league on Wednesday night. On the left flank, Robertson was a magician, breaking down obstacles on the flanks, helping, clearing the ball, passing, and, most importantly, being the man of the match. He was enthralling and enchanting.
Center-midfield
Thiago Alcantara, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo BentancurHojbjerg and Bentancur of Tottenham controlled and shut down Brighton's midfield with a stunning performance of swinging passes all over the field, creativity, vision, and, most importantly, an assist from Bentancur.
The combo was terrific and inseparable. Thiago Alcantara, a Liverpool player, is paired with him. His performance against the Gunners was a masterclass, as he came up with an assist after putting his team in a dangerous position that could have resulted in a goal, as well as three important passes, tackles, interceptions, and an 86.4 percent accurate pass.
Center-ForwardAlex Iwobi, Harry Kane, Diogo Jota
This week's team is led by Harry Kane and his teammates. He was unrelenting in his pursuit of Spurs' offensive power, causing a slew of issues for Brighton's defense and, best of all, putting six shots on goal, three important passes, and three received fouls in the process. Diogo Jota didn't get to play the entire game, but he did give the Reds the lead before being replaced.
On Thursday night against Newcastle United, Alex Iwobi may get all the attention and praise because he gave the Black Watch the perfect gift at a time when winning isn't an option.
