At the end of the season, Manchester United may attempt to employ Ajax manager Erik ten Hag as their next permanent manager.

Benfica's Darwin Nunez and Ajax's Sebastien Haller

Manchester United's hunt for a new manager is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, and it might have a significant impact on the success of their summer transfer revamp. As things stand, United's first pick to take over in the summer is Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, but the club has yet to make a final decision as it continues its search.

Mauricio Pochettino is still being considered, and United has not ruled out a move for Thomas Tuchel, despite the continued instability at Chelsea. In an ideal world, United would hire their next manager before the conclusion of the season to ensure a smooth transition into the summer transfer window and offer the ideal springboard for their next rebuild.

This will be vital ahead of a transfer window in which a slew of elite players might depart Old Trafford. Having a clear picture of the incoming leader as soon as feasible would also aid in determining who has a long-term future at the club.

Such an early appointment might be crucial in terms of recruitment heading into the summer window, as it will allow United to speed up conversations with targets and provide the club with a clearer vision of what they can sell during their pitch to a potential new acquisition. This might be especially beneficial to United's goal of signing a new striker at the end of the season, as Ralf Rangnick has already recommended the club to add a younger attacker to their squad.

United have made preliminary inquiries about acquiring Lyon attacker Moussa Dembele this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News, however he is just one of a number of players presently being considered. On the same night that United was knocked out of Europe, Ten Hag experienced the same fate at the hands of Benfica, particularly renowned attacker Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a summer move to United by the Portuguese press this season, and delivering the fatal blow against their probable next boss will have helped his prospects of a move. Nunez scored the solitary goal in Benfica's 1-0 away victory, demonstrating that he is a clinical finisher in the most crucial moments of a game when the stakes are high.

It was Nunez's 26th goal in 33 games this season, and considering the recent success of fellow Portuguese top-flight transfers Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, and Bruno Fernandes, there is reason to believe he may do well in the Premier League as well.

Not only has the South American shown his calm in front of goal this season, with four goals in the Champions League, but he has also shown his physicality in the final third, with a commanding attitude that allows him to hold his own against centre-backs, though he still needs to bulk up.

With veteran striker Edinson Cavani due to leave at the end of the season and Cristiano Ronaldo on the verge of leaving if United fail to finish in the top four, bringing in a new striker who can operate as the focal point of their assaults is a distinct possibility.

Adding a new midfielder will remain a goal regardless of who takes over as manager at Old Trafford, but if Ten Hag is appointed, he may want to bring Nunez with him to turn those European nightmares into fantasies.
