Residents said the pair has been arguing frequently, and the wife has vowed to leave him if the arguments continue. This enraged the man, who pulled out a rifle and shot the woman in the afternoon on their porch. The couple has no children together, but the woman is claimed to be the mother of six children.
The woman's two younger children live with the couple. They are both farmers, and Kwaku Obeng married Sophia to assist him with his farming as he grew older. According to Supt Iddrisu, the Gyakobu Police Commander, Kwaku Obeng shot Sophia in the neck and she died on the spot.
Because the children were at school at the time, the headmaster escorted them to his house after school had ended. While investigations continue, the deceased's body has been transferred to the mortuary of St. Peters Hospital in Gyakobu.
