It is an open secret that our Health workers are leaving Ghana in droves in search for better condition of service.

The numbers as revealed by the UK House of Commons Report are staggering. The report, according to Joy News reveals that, there are more doctors of Ghanaian Origin working in the United Kingdom alone than the number of doctors working in Ghana. The report pointed out that in 2021 for instance: There were 3,395 Ghanaian doctors in the UK alone. This figure is 159 more than the 3,236 doctors who were working in Ghana at the time.

In northern Ghana, most district Hospitals do not have doctors or have only one doctor. What happens if this single doctors fails to come to work for a particular day or even weeks? Some of these district are so far apart that transporting a patient from one facility to another on very terrible roads can severely exacerbate the condition of the patient.

Response from the Ghana Medical Association to the report.

The Ghana medical Association described the report as disturbing. Dr Justice Yankson, a Vice President of the association said the situation sterns from poor working and economic condition of doctors and health workers in general. He said there are daily reports of doctors leaving or planning to leave the service for greener pastures.

He stated that their service and expertise are highly sought after worldwide, yet they are paid a pittance in this country

Comments from other Professionals on the report.

Kwame Sarpong Asiedu, a research Fellow at Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) described the situation as worrying.

He stated that, it is the lack of physical space by the government to employ that is accountable. We don't have the right number of health professionals in this country according to the World Health Organization standard, yet the government do not have the ability to employ more or enabling conditions to keep the already employed. He described the policies underpinning the health sector as "Draconian" and needs review.
