This summer, DECLAN RICE will be the subject of much discussion.
Despite links to Chelsea, Paul Merson believes Declan Rice will be'surprised' if he remains at West Ham United next season. He has suggested Manchester United as an appealing destination. United are believed to be interested in his talents and may have an open goal for him given Chelsea's shaky ownership situation.
With only two months left in the season, Roman Abramovich's acrimonious exit as a result of UK and EU penalties has placed the Blues' summer transfer plans in limbo. Under both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, they are regarded to have been United's top challengers for Rice's signature.
Abramovich was noted for lavishing money on his players, resulting in an incredible trophy collection over the course of his two decades as Chelsea's owner. Chelsea could be out of the race for such a major deal now that the Russian oligarch has left the building.
In his latest essay, Merson urged Rice to join United, but believes the lack of Champions League football could be a deal-breaker. "Declan Rice should strike while the iron is hot this summer and leave West Ham," he wrote. He's improved his game this season and is now playing like N'Golo Kante, having an impact on both ends of the pitch.

"Declan Rice is unlikely to play for West Ham United next season. For months, they've been punching well above their weight. What options did he have? What happens at Chelsea and who buys the club will determine this.
"Manchester United is a good option, but will they be able to compete in the Champions League? Rice wants to play in that position. This weekend, they [West Ham] face Tottenham, and while facing Spurs should always be a major game for West Ham, the Europa League match versus Sevilla was more larger.
"Spurs have been passed by West Ham, and to be honest, I'm not sure how they allowed it to happen. West Ham will be kicking themselves if they miss out on the Champions League by a point or two. They'll be scratching their heads as to why they didn't go out and get another striker in January."
United is likely to make signing a defensive midfielder a priority this summer, and Rice might be at the top of their want list. However, it will largely be determined by the next manager's tastes, and, as Merson points out, a lack of Champions League experience could be a major stumbling block.
