The signing of Kylian Mbappe, the best player in the world at the moment, by Real Madrid is a foregone conclusion. Los Blancos are optimistic that they will be able to sign Erling Haaland this summer after the player's representation informed the club that he wishes to wear the renowned white shirt.
The problem is that Manchester City are also hopeful, as he has expressed an interest in playing for them.
Mino Raiola started the auction for Haaland a year ago, when he went on a European tour to meet potential buyers. On April 1, the ship docked in Spain, first in Barcelona and later in Madrid. Joan Laporta was enthusiastic, and Real Madrid listened intently before agreeing to meet with her again later. Mbappe was the main focus at the time.
Raiola was contacted a few months ago in order to restart talks. The agent requested that those discussions be postponed this time. He knew Barcelona was out, so he wanted PSG or Manchester City to seriously compete for the Norwegian.
As a substitute for Mbappe, PSG turned to Ousmane Dembele, while City has begun talks with Raiola about Haaland. Pep Guardiola is sure that City need to buy a goalscorer like Haaland after considering Cristiano Ronaldo last summer before deciding against it. City is willing to negotiate, raising the price of a purchase to 335-350 million euros.
Real Madrid is unwilling to pay such large sums or match City's salary. Mbappe will not be able to earn the 30 million euros that Haaland is seeking.
As a result, Haaland will make the decision. He'll join Real Madrid to form a lethal partnership with the Frenchman if he's happy to share the spotlight and money isn't his primary motivator. Otherwise, he'll make more money at City and be the center of their offensive strategy.
