Barcelona manager Xavi has intimated that Lionel Messi's return to the club could be imminent.
Messi departed Catalonia in an emotional state, after the La Liga club was unable to give him a new contract due to financial restrictions. Following that, the 34-year-old moved to PSG in a blockbuster deal that had many predicting the Parisians as UEFA Champions League favourites.
The Argentinian, on the other hand, has had a rough start in Paris. The French media and fans have slammed the team for lacklustre performances and a meagre goal total of seven in all competitions, including two in the league. Meanwhile, after taking over as manager of the Blaugrana in November last year, Messi's former Barcelona colleague Xavi has made significant changes at the club.
The improvement in form under Xavi has been impressive, so Barcelona fans will be pleased by his comments regarding a possible reunion with Messi. "I think Messi is the best in history and in the history of the club," the Spaniard said (via Forbes), clearly leaving the door open for the seven-time Balon d'Or winner to return to the Camp Nou.
Xavi went onL. "The doors will remain open, and as long as I am a coach, he is welcome to come every day (to observe training or speak with the coaches). We owe him a huge debt of gratitude as a club. I can't do anything because he's signed a contract with PSG."
The PSG forward's deal at the Parc des Princes extends until June 2023, with a one-year extension option. Xavi's comments, however, have fueled speculation over the player's future in Paris.
