Meta is a greek word meaning beyond and verse is from the word universe. Metaverse was first spoken about by American Novelist Neil Stephenson in his 1992 science-fiction novel “Snow Crash”. He describes it as a virtual reality based world that will be a successor to the internet. A world where people will use digital avatars to work,play and interact online as a way to escape a dystopian reality.
Today we describe the metaverse as a fully immersive internet, where we will be able to access augmented and virtual reality and interact with all sorts of environments using persistent avatars and innovative digital technology. Metaverse is not a new thing its concept is used in video games like fortnite and roblox. But tech giants see it as an inevitability. For instance , according to Mark Zuckerberg, the ceo of facebook mankind will migrate into the metaverse in the future, leaving reality behind for a world that we create and govern entirely. He claims that there will come a moment when virtual worlds are so absorbing and handy that we will not want to leave, at which point the metaverse will emerge.
How would the metaverse be like and how can you access it?
The metaverse unlike the virtual space in video games like grand theft auto, the metaverse will use real people and real storylines and all elements of real life.You can access the metaverse using virtual reality devices such as oculus quest 2 VR headsets,valve, htc etc.
Examples of metaverses include meta(facebooks metaverse), microsoft mesh, ali metaverse of alibaba,disney meta and many more.
