Gary Neville is confident Manchester United are on the verge of appointing a new manager

Manchester United are on the verge of choosing a new manager, according to Gary Neville, who has previously interviewed Erik ten Hag for the vacant role.

Ralf Rangnick took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis in December, but he is not considered a permanent replacement, and it is unclear whether the German will take up the consultant job he was supposed to play.

Ten Hag has pleased United's top brass with his performance at Ajax, although Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Enrique, and Julen Lopetegui are still in the running and will most likely be interviewed.

According to reports, the United position is Ten Hag's to lose, but director of football John Murtough is wary of repeating recent mistakes and intends to conduct a thorough search to ensure he hires the best person to supervise a massive reconstruction project.

Despite the fact that the process is still in its early stages, Neville expects an announcement will be made soon, with the new manager being revealed 'in a week or so.'

'Reports Ten Hag has been interrogated this week,' he stated on Twitter. If official interviews have begun, and because this is such a public process, I would anticipate a new management announcement in the next week or two.'

Gary Neville had been keen on the idea of Man Utd appointing Diego Simeone

'Simeone should be an option, but it's never been possible to get him out of Atletico Madrid,' Neville said on  Sports news.

'He's wed, he's tied, but it'd be fantastic to see him in the Premier League, absolutely fantastic.'

'As you saw on Tuesday night – and I've seen it many times – I was beaten 2-0 by him in Valencia by a superb Atletico Madrid team that [Antoine] Griezmann was a part of before he moved to Barcelona.

'He's a wonderful coach, harsh in his approach to the game — I think his sides are tough in every manner.'

'Manchester United are in desperate need of a harsh manager. Manchester United require a manager capable of competing with the best, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. So they'll need someone who can stand on the sidelines with them and feel equal to them, and I believe Simeone can do that.

'I wouldn't rule Simeone out completely, but I think Ten Hag and Pochettino are the way forward because they [United's hierarchy] will want a young, progressive coach - not that Pochettino is young – but a progressive coach who plays a specific manner.

'And [a coach] who is perhaps a little less expensive and more readily available.' I'm not sure how much it would cost to lure Simeone away from Atletico Madrid, but Manchester United would have to pay a lot of money.
