The Ghana Police Service has demanded that the assault of an alleged suspect in police custody be investigated.

On Tuesday, amateur video appeared on social media showing a young man being tortured while shackled on the floor.

The swollen-faced 30-year-old man is accused of plotting with another person to assassinate his father.

The police officers who are seen slapping the man, Stephen Gyedu, appear enraged by this allegation.

When he tries to describe what happened, the purported police hit him across the face and lips, repeatedly pushing answers from him.

Among the gang torturing the suspect, the voices of a male and female are the loudest.

This video has sparked outrage on social media over the treatment of people in police custody during the last 24 hours.

However, it is unclear which police command was in charge of the incident.

The cops' handling of the putative suspect was criticised by the police in a statement.

The Police Professional Standards Bureau has been tasked with looking into the incident's circumstances and "reporting its results of the investigation to the Police Administration for any disciplinary proceedings against anyone deemed responsible."

"The Police Administration would like to urge all service personnel to always be guided by the fundamental human rights of all people and to behave in accordance with the law," the tweet continued.
