Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the goalkeeper for Barcelona, has left Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer out of his ideal starting XI.

Between 2014 and 2021, Ter Stegen and Messi were teammates at the Nou Camp, before the latter joined PSG last summer.

Barcelona won LaLiga four times and the Champions League during this span, with Messi widely recognised as the team's top performer.

However, this was not enough to get the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner into ter Stegen's team, as the goalkeeper instead chose Frenkie de Jong to play in the attacking midfielder role.

He also passed over Messi while selecting his attackers, instead opting for the German combo of Marco Reus and Mario Gotze.

Ter Stegen has played with both players at the international level, and he still seems to have a soft spot for Gotze, who scored the game-winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

Neuer, despite being Germany's first-choice goalkeeper for nearly a decade, did not make the cut.

Despite the fact that the 35-year-old has 108 international caps to his name and is the current captain of the national team, ter Stegen chose Janis Blaswich to play in goal.

Blaswich and ter Stegen were teammates at Borussia Monchengladbach, and the former is now at Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands.

There were few shocks otherwise in ter Stegen's compact 4-4-2 system, as he named a back line of Dani Alves, Antonio Rudiger, Gerard Pique, and Jordi Alba.

The legendary Barcelona midfield trio of Sergio Busquets, Xavi, and Andres Iniesta were then chosen in the middle of the park, before de Jong was chosen ahead of Messi in the No. 10 position.
