Manchester United's shortlist for manager does not include Zinedine Zidane.
Since leaving the Bernabeu, the former Real Madrid coach has been unemployed.
United have not considered Zidane, according to Ally McCoist.
According to the Scot, the Frenchman would be a terrific fit for the job.
Manchester United are missing a trick by bypassing Zinedine Zidane in their quest for a new manager, according to Ally McCoist, because the former Real Madrid manager possesses all of the necessary attributes to thrive at Old Trafford.
United are said to have put together a four-man shortlist to replace interim manager Ralf Rangnick in the summer, which includes Ajax's Erik Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino of Paris Saint-Germain, but excludes Zidane.
According to Sportsmail, Ten Hag had an interview with United earlier this week and is considered a strong contender for the post.
Zidane, who won three Champions League titles in a row from 2016 to 2018, departed Real for the second time in May of last year, and McCoist is perplexed as to why the former France star has not been considered for the job at United.
Manchester United's four-man shortlist for their new manager does not include Zinedine Zidane.
Ally McCoist was taken aback by the news. Zidane's appointment has not been explored by United.
United have not considered appointing Zidane, according to Ally McCoist.
'Zidane is the one name I haven't heard from,' McCoist added.
'Clearly, the Champions League is the one thing he can do and does on a regular basis.' That he has demonstrated. With Real Madrid, he did it three times.
'I'm not sure why he isn't in the race at all because he can handle big players, big pressure, and a huge situation at a major club.' Unless he's declared himself ineligible?'
Zidane has been connected with United on multiple occasions in the past, but is thought to be wary of taking on a project in the middle of a season.
Former United striker Louis Saha has shown his support for the 48-year-old, who took the position at Old Trafford after resigning as manager of Real Madrid after the Spanish giants failed to win a title last season.
United are looking for a new manager to take over from interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
Erik Ten Hag is widely seen as the frontrunner to take over at Old Trafford this summer.
'He's such a significant figure, and there's no doubt about the respect he'll receive,' says Erik Ten Hag, who is expected to take over at Old Trafford in the summer. He'll have plenty of time to get his affairs in order. For enjoyment, he's won Champions Leagues.
'And the fact that (Real) Madrid is the most difficult position for a manager didn't help him.' Everyone recognizes that the Spanish league is really difficult.
'I believe he has all the tools, but I'm not sure if he'll move to United.'
The magnitude of the challenge ahead of United's first permanent manager since Ole Gunnar Solskjr was ousted in November will not be lost on any of the candidates under consideration.
The Red Devils will finish the season without a trophy and will have a difficult time qualifying for the Champions League.
United sit in sixth place in the Premier League, four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
