Diogo Jota missed a golden opportunity for Portugal on Thursday night, and Manchester United fans were quick to criticize him. Bruno Fernandes delivered a pin-point cross for Diogo Jota to put away.
Bruno Fernandes of the Red Devils made an inch-perfect delivery to the back post from a wide free-kick against Turkey in the World Cup qualifiers. The cross, though, lacked the finishing touch, as Jota stretched out and sent his effort well over the bar.
United fans were enraged by Fernandes' miss, believing that he had been robbed of a good opportunity, and they turned to Twitter to voice their grievances. "How do you miss that, Jota?" one wrote. Bruno, you've hit the ball out of the park."
"Bruno was robbed," said another fan. "That was an incredible delivery by Bruno, shocking miss Jota," one person said. "Jota, how do you miss that?" said a third. Bruno, you've hit the ball out of the park."
Fortunately for Jota, he was able to redeem himself later in the game when he increased Portugal's lead. The 25-year-header old's past Ugurcan Cakir at the near post gave Fernando Santos' team a two-goal lead at the break.
Jota managed to miss from only two yards out.
Jota has 13 Premier League goals in 26 appearances for Liverpool, replacing Roberto Firmino in Jurgen Klopp's starting lineup. The playmaker has scored some critical goals for Liverpool, but his link-up play with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane cannot be overstated, and he is now a vital member of the squad.
Liverpool are only one point behind league leaders Manchester City, and the season is shaping up to be an exciting finish. He told Viaplay Football on the possibility of sharing the Portugal dressing room with Manchester City players: "Obviously, we all know they have some Portuguese lads as well, and we all meet up today in the international squad." That kind of competition is something we always talk about. But when the game arrives, we'll take it on like any other."
