A steel bridge that connects the settlements of Navio and Tazika to Paga in the Upper East Region has fallen. When a heavy-duty DAF truck hauling logs crossed it on Wednesday morning, it fell. The vehicle, with the registration number AW 8894-12, was traveling from Tangasougo, Burkina Faso, to Paga.
The truck's three occupants, including the driver, were unharmed. Commuters who utilize that section of the road on a regular basis have been left trapped at both ends of the bridge due to a lack of alternate routes to Navrongo and Paga, according to Graphic Online.
Many private and government employees, particularly nurses and teachers, who utilize the route to get to their various places of employment, have abandoned it.
Some locals told Graphic Online that the bridge, which was built some 30 years ago, had grown brittle.
They claimed that the river's overflowing banks had caused the concrete piers to deteriorate over time.
When contacted, Mr Gerard Ataogye, the Chief Executive for Kassena Nankana West District, indicated that preparations were in the works to provide a temporary alternate route for commuters on that section of road.
"Fortunately, the road has been captured under the feeder roads project and will soon be packaged and awarded, which will also include the reconstruction of the steel bridge," he added, assuring users that the assembly is doing everything possible to ease their transportation on the road following the bridge's collapse.
