Bismarck Owusu Nortey, the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana's Programmes Officer, claims that the cost of cultivating an acre of land has increased significantly.
Mr Owusu Nortey estimates that cultivating an acre of land for maize production in 2021 will cost around GH1007, while farming the same piece of land this year will cost around GH3,300.
On the JoyNews AM Show, Benjamin Akakpo said that the cost could exceed the estimated amount because "costs are still going up everyday."
"Just look at the difference in a year," he said. The expense, according to Mr. Owusu Nortey, includes "fertilizer, weedicide, labor, and harvesting," among other things.
The Programmes Officer was speaking about the high cost of agricultural produce during a debate.
Mr. Owusu Nortey also stated on Wednesday that farmers are paying twice as much for subsidised fertiliser provided by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA).
"Fortunately for us, some of our farmers benefit from the subsidy program." Last year, if you bought a 25kg subsidized fertilizer, you would have paid roughly $53. MOFA has announced that a 25kg fertilizer will cost you 160 dollars this year."
He believes that conditions will worsen next year as prices rise.
What happens is that when you manufacture, the final product will almost certainly grow to compensate for the high production costs you incurred. Remember, you'll be dealing with high fuel prices and transportation fares again next year. It's possible that this will increase the price. Mr Owusu Nortey added, "We should prepare ourselves for a bigger increase in input prices."
