Two individuals have been apprehended and are being held in police custody after posing as employees of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and extorting money from clients.

Richard Nii Moi and Edward Quartey, the suspects, are being held at the Israel Police Station in Accra, near Sowutuom.

ECG Achimota District Manager Mrs Mary Kpordzih said the suspects pretended to be ECG Revenue Collection and Disconnection Officers and extorted money from clients who could not present receipts for recent ECG bill payments.

"However, their method of operation piqued the interest of several residents, who demanded to see their identification, but this proved unsuccessful," she claimed.

According to the District Manager, the suspects' explanations were unconvincing, prompting citizens to raise an alarm and report their activities to the District Office.

The suspects were tracked down and apprehended, and they are currently being held in police custody for further investigation.

Mrs. Kpordzih appreciated the locals' vigilance and advised consumers to always verify the identification of anyone who claims to be a member of the Company's personnel.

"Whenever in doubt, report such suspicious individuals to the local ECG office or police station," she added.

Meanwhile, ECG has recently stepped up its revenue collection efforts, including forming a National Revenue Taskforce to crack down on customers who are breaking the law.
