It is said that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Entertainment is a way of refreshing one after a hard day's work. Sitting at almost the same spot, receiving knowledge can sometimes be challenging. Entertainment helps to free one's mind of other burdens that seem to wear you down. The Ghana Education Service, like any body overseeing education, recognizes the need for entertainment and has approved the same for schools across the country, especially boarding schools. It is an event that most students always look forward to during the weekends.
Our Senior High schools offer a wide range of entertainment.
There are various programmes that are tailored towards entertaining the students. It is also a way of helping them unearth their talents. These programs include, but are not limited to,
"Pick and act".
Certain roles are written on pieces of paper, and students pick them at random and act based on the instructions on the paper. If a student picks up a paper that says "act as your maths master in class," He or she will be required to do the same.
"Drama"
Here, a group of students come together to act in a play. It could be an educational play or any trending movie. This type of entertainment is not liked by most students. It is said that it is a boring one.
"Jams"
It is a sought-after entertainment programme. It is categorized into types. We have reggae night, gospel night, among others. Loud music is played through huge speakers, and students dance their hearts out.
Most of the songs played are the most trending or what can be described as the latest songs. The entertainment master and the entertainment prefect will always look for these songs and play them. This is the program where the most ugly things happen. These students have girlfriends or boyfriends, and jam days are the days that will show which couple dances best.
They fondle each other in the process of dancing and make certain dance moves that leave much to be desired. It is always difficult for teachers to control them during this period. Scuffles can also break out if two boys have the same girl and each of them wants to dance with the same girl. Feuding factions always look out for this day to square it out, and the end result can be catastrophic. These events, which are mostly held at night, have forced school officials to move them to the daytime.
Events after entertainment
After the entertainment, these students now move in pairs. The pairs are mostly lovers, and they look for a quiet place to discuss issues of the heart. This sometimes results in sexual encounters. School authorities have devised plans to rig the bell for them to go to bed after entertainment.
This is to stop them from congregating after the entertainment program. Sometimes, these measures are ignored by the students. School authorities have further moved to form cadets whose job will be to go round the school to chase out the bad boys and girls who will be hiding and doing things. There are several reports of these cadets arresting their colleagues in the act of doing the "thing".
Entertainment has become a necessary evil. There have been demonstrations against schools that have refused to organize jam sessions for their students.
The counseling departments of the schools have been advising our students against these amorous activities, and it looks like most of them are not listening. This is a clarion call to all, especially parents, to advise their children against pre-marital sex and monitor what they watch on TV or use their phones for.
Please share to help create awareness.
