According to a research on Ghana's vision for resilient infrastructure in a changing climate, the country would face increasingly severe climate risks such as floods and more frequent and extreme drought.

According to the 165-page assessment, the impact of climate change on Ghana's socio-economic growth has the potential to jeopardize the country's standing as a middle-income country.

Drought and flooding exposure, for example, were climate risks in the water sector, according to the research, which had the potential to impact important water assets such as the Weija, Akosombo, Bui, Tono, and Vea Dams.

In addition, due to reduced water availability, river and other water resources used by families, particularly in smaller and rural areas, were projected to endure droughts. The reduced river runoff was likely to affect up to 1.3 million Ghanaians, according to the report, which was put together in partnership with the government, through the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), the Global Centre on Adaption (GCA), the United Nations Environment Programme, and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), in less than 24 months.

The rise in drought will further harm over 242,000 people who rely on the natural environment for domestic energy generation through wood fuel, according to Professor Patrick Verkooijen, who handed over the findings to Minister of MESTI, Dr Kwaku Afriyie, yesterday in Accra.
