Former President John Dramani Mahama has accused the Ghanaian court system of being controlled by political forces.

Mr Mahama stated the party has an issue with the judiciary when speaking to the US Chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Bentley University over the weekend.

The 2020 NDC flagbearer, who lost the polls and afterwards filed a petition with the Supreme Court, insists that the judiciary has to be reformed immediately.

"It's true that we have issues with the judiciary. I believe that certain internal adjustments are required there. Reforms must be implemented by the Chief Justice or whoever is in charge. The majority of government institutions have become politicized. I'll use the judiciary as an example. Only in Ghana will a Supreme Court rule that a birth certificate is not sufficient proof of citizenship," he remarked.

"There have been a lot of such amusing decisions made." I recall our colleague Professor Raymond Atuguba saying once that, based on his studies, judges tend to rule in favor of the political party or leader who selected them.

"He was exposed to such a tempest of fury by the Judiciary, but if you look at what's going on today and see who appointed who, you'll see that there was some truth in it."
