UEFA is working on a reform that will introduce a new way for clubs to qualify for the Champions League.
The European Club Association, which has ten Premier League clubs as members, wants qualification based on coefficient ranking rather than league finish, according to the Guardian.
Coefficient is a criterion used to rank clubs, similar to the FIFA World Rankings, and it is determined based on a club's European performances during the last five years. The ideas call for clubs that do not qualify for the Champions League but do qualify for the Europa League or win a domestic cup to fight for two places in the Champions League based on their coefficient position.
This is primarily being pushed for implementation starting in 2024, when the competition will be enlarged to 36 teams, allowing four additional teams to qualify.
It would also imply that more 'major' teams from Europe's top leagues, such as the Premier League, would qualify for the Champions League despite not finishing in the top four.
Bayern Munich currently leads the UEFA club coefficient rankings, with Manchester City and Liverpool rounding out the top three.
